They said the “p word”

Say the P Word! What are the impacts when we (mis)educate folks to view their bodies exclusively as sites of harm and violence rather than spaces capable of experiencing deep care, affirmation and safety? In this workshop, participants will examine their biases and explore how we individually and collectively access and experience pleasure, given our lenses, identities and experiences. When we understand pleasure beyond mere gratification, instead upheld as a liberatory tactic, pleasure-centered education is a strategy to equip folks with the necessary tools for safety, harm reduction and violence prevention.
This workshop will be offered at the National Sex Ed Conference. Click here for more information about NSEC

Realities of Higher Ed: Sex Ed Edition

In this workshop, participants will reflect upon their understandings of sex and intimacy as well as why some people might choose to explore different forms of sex and intimacy. During this section, students will have the opportunity learn about protection methods and harm reduction tactics. Then, students will have the opportunity to discuss the qualities of safe and “feel good” relationship(s) as well as assess the role of power and positionality within interpersonal relationships. Students will then have the opportunity to define consent in relation to substances and harm reduction. Ultimately, we will wrap up with supporting students in exploring their sense(s) of pleasure and boundaries.

This workshop is through Front Range Community College and Westminster High School.

They said the “p word”

Say the P Word!
In this workshop, participants are to reflect on the value of discussing PLEASURE in our classrooms and learning spaces. There's often a fear of discussing pleasure with young people when there doesn't need to be. Pleasure is a measure of safety. Pleasure is a tool of harm reduction. Please is a tactic collective liberation. Our bodies are not only sites for oppression, harm and violence--but instead, sites for love, pleasure and liberation. During our time together, participants will explore strategies, activities and tactics to incorporate the p-word into our classrooms and learning spaces.
This workshop is to debut at SLAM 2024, Apr 29th-May 3rd. Click here for more information about S.L.A.M.

de-colonizing love and intimacy

"There can be no love without justice." - bell hooks

What would/might it look like to love away from control, violence and possession?
In this workshop, participants are to reflect upon their love ethic and what it means to love and be intimate with another, with self and with community. Love, in all her forms, is a tactic and measure of liberation. Love is the catalyst for community movements and collective acts of resistance. Love is what keeps us soft. Love is what keeps us hopeful. Love is what moves us one step closer to our Liberation.
Join Sam Casanova in exploring and re-imagining what it means to de-colonize love and intimacy, individually and collectively.

They said the “p word”

Say the P Word!
In this workshop, participants are to reflect upon the value of discussing pleasure (and/or simply feeling good) in our sex ed classrooms and learning spaces. There's often a fear and stigma when it comes to discussing pleasure with young people when there doesn't need to be.

Pleasure is a measure of safety. Pleasure is a tool of harm reduction. Please is a tactic for our collective liberation. Afrosexology reminds us that “it is very important that we do not only see our bodies as places that can be harmed but also as bodies capable of experiencing deep love, pleasure and liberation.” Our youth (and really all of us!) deserve to know and practice that. During our time together, participants will engage in word-association activities, written reflections, and self-assessments in order to unpack personal biases and values around pleasure–as well as have the opportunity to explore and brainstorm strategies and tactics to incorporate the P-word into classrooms and learning spaces. Why? Because we all deserve to feel good–including our young people!
This workshop is to debut at SLAM 2024, March 12th-15th. Click here for more information about S.L.A.M.

Sharing Our Stories: Building New Worlds

This session will begin with foundational context around what is happening socio-politically in the U.S, as it relates to queer and trans communities. Then, participants will engage with a series of snapshots in time showcasing the existence, resilience and contributions of trans and queer folks throughout history, cultures and movements. In this session, we are to discuss the ongoing importance and value of sharing our stories amidst acts of anti-LGBT rhetoric, legislation and violence. Sharing our stories and counternarratives allows us to define our identities and experiences for ourselves. Despite attempts, our stories will not be dismissed, fabricated or erased.

Participants will be encouraged to write a letter to their younger selves as they reflect upon a series of questions around their own understandings of living fully and authentically. This workshop is to be delivered at One Colorado's Queer Youth Summit.
